The hottest grills on the market for 2024.Premium grills can be broken into segments, portable or cart grills, and built-in or island grills.

I will tell you what you need to know if you are in the market for a new bbq grill this season. This post explains your current options for grills. When I am in the market for a new grill I look at a few things: price, gas, electric, or portable grills. These are the big decisions you need to make. Whats interesting, is that, the less expensive bbq grills have come a long way in terms of options and performance.

Premium Portable Gas Grills

While premium portable grills (grills on a cart) can range from $3,000 to $42,000, they are the easiest to do, since you put it place, hook to gas (natural gas or propane) and in most cases with todays grills you also need electricity for the ignition, lights, rotisserie and other goodies. Models on carts with side burners, power burners, and back burners for rotisserie.

Expect to pay between $8-15K for most premium brands top of the line models depending on size and features. Several also makers have lower priced premium brands. So, is it worth it to get an expensive, perceived high end bbq grill? The answer is maybe. If you have the cash to blow on an expensive grill, go ahead and buy it. Now a days, the less expensive grills have many of the same bells and whistles as the expensive grills. So, it’s up to you what you want to spend. Many people are going much cheaper on the bbq grill, and really spending money on their outdoor kitchen. Makes Sense. The most popular bbq grill sizes are 30″ to 36″.

Premium Built-In Gas Grills

Built-In or Island grills give you the ability to build the outdoor kitchen of your dreams, as small or as grand as you like.

Built-In Grills are built into island enclosures.

  • Stone Islands
  • Metal Frame Islands – Galvanized Steel or Aluminum wrapped with concrete boards
  • Cabinetry – Aluminum or Stainless Steel
  • Cabinetry – HDPE or Plastic

Masonry Islands are generally hand done by masons in brick or stone. You need a strong foundation and not recommended for a deck due to the weight. In addition to the grill head, you will want stainless steel doors and drawers, sinks and other accessories to add some functionality. This look has been around for a while and is dated. $$$$

Metal Frame Islands – Galvanized Steel or Aluminum frames (if steel, be sure the steel is galvanized or it will rust out quickly). Many of these islands are made and sold at BBQ stores. They make them in house and apply stucco. Some add brick or stone veneer to mimic the look of a masonry Island. In addition to the grill head, you will want stainless steel doors and drawers, sinks and other accessories to add some functionality. The stucco islands in particular has lost favor as have brick and stone generally. Easier and less expensive alternative to having a masonry island. These islands trap moisture, venting is required or it will degrade from the inside. $$

Outdoor Kitchen Cabinetry – Modular cabinetry is the newest look, and is growing rapidly in popularly and is perfect for designing the outdoor kitchen of your dreams. There are options in the range of prices, and material. Cabinets are available to fit your size of grill, and trim for the exact make (no two brands of grill are the same size). Cabinets are also available for storage, garbage/ recycling, cabinets with drawers and cabinets for LP Tanks and Sinks. Interior of the cabinets can usually be customized to fit your storage needs. Every inch of cabinetry is functional, no need to purchase other doors and drawers.

Aluminum and Stainless cabinets are very popular. They are strong, and make a great looking kitchen. Both marine grade stainless steel (302L) and marine grade aluminum don’t rust. Powder coating to add color is very popular today, and the materials, once powder coated, are equivalent, therefore we see no reason to be using stainless steel in this application. Top makers in stainless steel are Brown Jordan $$$$ and John Michael Studio $$$$$. Top makers in marine grade aluminum are Casa Bella Outdoor Kitchen Cabinetry $$$ and Urban Bonfire $$$

Plastic or HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) cabinetry is also modular, with cabinets for grills, storage, sinks etc. Since cabinetry is combustible, all cooking appliances require an insulating liner. This can add 1-2K per appliance to the project. Naturekast $$$$ has really dominated this market with their woodgrain look that mimics your indoor kitchen. Not recommended for hot environments, HDPE can warp over 110 degrees, and color can fade. Other players in this material is Werever $$$ and Weatherstong who claim to have a composite board. $$$

Countertop Choices

Countertops must be non-combustible including the underlayment and adhesive. Most popular countertops have been granite and marble, both very good choices. But like countertops inside, man made materials and composite materials have also become popular. Dekton and Lapitec are popular choices.
